THE talent of a Championship club shone through on Sunday as Aberystwyth Town fell to a 3-1 defeat against Hull City Under 23s in their final pre-season friendly.
Goals from Liam Edwards and Elliott Holmes within a minute of each other gave Hull City a two-goal cushion midway through the first half before Tyler Hamilton made it three just eight minutes into the second half.
The Seasiders battled throughout and Joe Phillips netted a deserved consolation just four minutes later in what was a spirited display from the home side.
Aber boss Neville Powell will take the positives from a testing afternoon as attention turns to his side’s Welsh Premier League opener at Barry Town United on Sunday (5.15pm ko).
Aber dominated early on as Malcolm Melvin’s corner was fired over by Jon Owen, before Luke Borrelli fired across the face of goal.
The visitors soon found their feet though and took the lead in the 27th minute when Hamilton slid Edwards in down the left wing and he finished low into the far corner. A minute later, Holmes smashed the ball into the roof of the net close range to double the lead.
The Tigers’ Greg Lear could have put the game to bed but he curled wide from an excellent position, before Borrelli forced two late saves to give the hosts hope going into the break.
The busy Borrelli was denied for a third time early in the half, but it was Hull who grabbed the next goal.
Hamilton raced 70 yards before lifting the ball beyond Chris Mullock.
But Aber kept coming and it was down to sub Phillips to unleash a superb low drive from the edge of the area.
There were chances aplenty as the game wore on with Phillips twice going close while Mullock was on hand to deny the visitors before the referee brought the entertaining contest to a close.
